Course content |
Theoretical introduction in the thema. The conception of culture and history of culture in the Bulgarian tradition. The relation between history of culture and history of arts; causality between history of culture and other human sciences (historiography, ethnography, ethnology, historical anthropology, archaelogy). The meaning of "center" and "periphery" for the understanding of the national culture. The Bulgarian space and its material culture in the pre-Slavonic period. Thracian culture - its place and importance. The processes of slavonization of the bulgarian lands and their reflection in culture. The Bulgarian nationhood and culture life. The Golden age of the Bulgarian culture. The tradition of popular culture in the Bulgarian history. Ethno-cultural character of Bulgarians and folklore. The cultural development in the era of the Bulgarian national revival. The changes in the Bulgarian culture in the 20th century (thematical concretization with regard on particular areas of cultural activity). The Bulgarian culture after 1990. The cultural potential of Bulgaria - the final considerations.

Learning outcomes |
The course is focused on the culture of the Bulgarian nation and its history, the changes of the Bulgarian nation in the past centuries, the most important events of the Bulgarian spiritual life and, last but not least, its distinctive features.
The students will be able to define and analyze the elementary chapters of Bulgarian cultural history (spiritual and material) and Bulgarian cultural dialogues with Europe, East or neighbours. |
