Course content
The origin of everyday history research. Social history and historical anthropology. Micro-history. History of mentalities. Part I: Material Culture: Industrialization and its social consequences. Urbanization and the face of the town. The birth of the modern town. Rural changes. Social structure and movements in society. Barter and consumption; the structure of consumption; business; shopping; the birth of the department store; advertising. Money and prices. House, flat, lease, sub-lease. Changes in private space, flat, furniture. Lightning and heating. Communal hygiene, household hygiene, personal hygiene. Health. Clothing and clothing fashion. Fashion as a "trouble". The origin of ready-made clothes and the fashion saloon. Eating and tabling. Home-made food, ways of public eating. Recipes and cookery books. Risks of eating. Part II: Mentalities and Attitudes: Child, childhood, upbringing, traumas of childhood. Triumph of institutional education - from cr?che to university. Social aspects of education; issue of female education. Entry to life - life of learning; studies; army life. Family, marriage, sexuality. Old age, death, burial, cremation. Festivity changes - private and public celebrations; from religious fair to political fair; forms of celebrations and shows. Forms of sociability - communities, saloons, coffee and table companies. Free time - the discovery of free time, enjoyment, dance, reading. Traveling and sport.

Learning outcomes
The aim of this course is to clarify the causes of contemporary consumer-oriented society formation by searching for its historical roots.
Students will understand the world of "historical practice", the everyday life of people in the 19th and 20th centuries, focusing on an inter-disciplinary concept of cultural history.

Written examination

Credit depends upon active participation in lectures; a written examination, during which a student must demonstrate an orientation in the given field, plus knowledge of all the titles from the obligatory and recommended literature.
