Course content
Transatlantic discoveries and their impact on the "Old Continent". Book printing and the revolution in communication in the 16th century. Czechs and their history - changes of historiography in the 16th century. From Wittenberg to Trident - the Reformation, Confessionalisation, and the Catholic Reformation. From Gothic to Renaissance - the status of art in the society of the Early Modern Period. The so-called "Revolution of gun powder" and its influence on the development of Central European militarism. The Turks and Central Europe in the 16th century. Between "estates" and "absolutism" - Europe and its state system. The Habsburgs, Europe, and the formation of the Danubian monarchy. The Czech rebellion of the estates and the events of 1618-1621 from the point of view of the contemporaries. Towns as a political and socio-cultural phenomenon in the first century of the Early Modern Period. Baltic area in the 16th century. Thirty Years War.

Learning outcomes
The aim of this course is to cover chronologically and the broad period from the transatlantic discoveries till the end of the Thirty Years War, focusing on the 16th century. The aim is a deep analysis of specific topics and the events that were crucial for this epoch (book printing, the Reformation, the military revolution, the Turk issue, the formation of the Habsburg group of states, etc.) with the help of written and pictorial sources, their interpretation, and further discussion on concrete problems. The development of critical thinking is stressed. Students will be able to apply an analytical approach to working with sources, supported by knowledge of secondary literature for solving research tasks in the area of historical science.
Students will be able to critically analyze early modern sources as well as understand basic secondary literature.

Written examination

Credit is dependent on active participation during seminars, as well as the willingness and capacity for discussion; reading prepared texts; regular discussions about the readings; an abstract; a final semester test; and a list of studied literature (10 titles + 2 studies).
