Course content
Mannerist architecture in Europe and in the Czech lands. Baroque architecture in Italy (G. Guarini, F. Borromini, G. L. Bernini). Baroque architecture in France, England and Central Europe (Ch. Wren, J. B. Fischer of Erlach etc.). Baroque architecture in Bohemia and in Moravia in the 17th century (J. B. Mathey, Italian architects etc.). Baroque architecture in Bohemia and in Moravia in the 18th century (K. and K. I. Dientzenhofer, J. B. Santini etc.). Classicism and French Imperial Style: Europe and the Czech lands. Romantic and historical styles in the 19th century (the Gothic Revival, the Renaissance Revival, the Baroque Revival): Europe and the Czech lands. Roots of modern architecture movement: Victorian Engineering, Arts and Crafts Movement. The European Art Nouveau (V. Horta, H. van de Velde, A. Gaudí, Ch. R. Mackintosh, O. Wagner and others). The Art Nouveau in Bohemia and Moravia (D. Jurkovič, A. Balšánek, O. Polívka, J. Fanta). Individual Modernism in Bohemia and Moravia ( Jan Kotěra, O. Novotný, B. Waigant). Interwar architecture in the Czech lands (Functionalism, Modern Classicisms, Poetism), SORELA (Socialist Realism) in the 50s.

Learning outcomes
The goal of this course is to give students a basic outline of the European and Czech architecture development from the turn of the 16th century to the 1st half of the 20th century. The lecture stresses the role of leading artists and it concentrates on ideological, cultural and social context of the emergence of individual styles, architecture streams and particular works.
Students will understand the problems of European and Czech architecture development, they will learn style attributes of individual style periods and they will be informed about the outstanding creators.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral examination, Home assignment evaluation

Students will receive credit on account of final oral interview during which they should prove knowledge of the subject matter and reading of recommended literature (every student will bring a list of literature with a minimum of 8 titles). Credit will be granted after writing and delivering semestral paper on the submited topic (essay to the extent of 10 standardized pages).
