Course content |
Histological laboratory. Equipment, instrumentation and operation of a histology laboratory. Principles of health and safety. Preparation of the histological specimens. Methods for tissue sampling and preparation for a histological study. Fixation - purposes of fixation, types of fixatives. Types of mounting media, embedding principles. Paraffin embedding. Method for making histological sections. Working, principle and types of microtomes. Microscopy slides, adhesive media. Staining of histological sections. Classification of dyes. Staining of paraffin section. Hematoxylin-eosin staining on histological sections. Mounting. Water-insoluble and water-soluble mounting media. Liquid cover glass. Basic principles of histochemistry and immunohistochemistry. Basic principles of flow cytometry. Light microscop - types, application. Condensers, lenses, eyepieces. Magnification, resolving power, numerical aperture. Dark field microscopy, phase contrast microscopy, polarized light microscopy. Differential interference contrast microscopy (DIC). Hoffman modulation contrast microscopy. Epi-fluorescence microscopy. Confocal laser scanning microscopy. Transmission electron Microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Specimen preparation for electron microscopy. Practical demonstrations of different types of microscopes. Exkursion to the histological laboratory. Credit.

Learning outcomes |
Students learn the basic procedurs that are used in the preparation of histological slides at the seminar. Student also learn the diagnostic methods commonly used in biomedical laboratories applications.
The students will learn the general principles for preparing a tissue specimen for microscopic examination. Students will also learn the principles and techniques of methods and instruments used in biomedical laboratories. |
