Course content
We explore political, religious, and social changes as well as economic, technological, and cultural developments. Topics include: Germanic tribes and the Roman Empire Charlemagne and the idea of the "Reich" Martin Luther and the Reformation Classicism and Romanticism Industrial Revolution Berlin's development Rise and Fall of the Habsburg Empire World War I and World War II the Division of Germany: BRD and DDR 1989 Switzerland's alternative way Germany and Austria in the European Union

Learning outcomes
Studying history will sharpen your insights into the functioning of past societies, helping you formulate a more critical awareness of the problems of the present. This course is designed to familiarize students with the history of German speaking countries, from the beginnings to the present. The main focus is on Germany and Austria, less on Switzerland and the German minorities in other countries. The aim is also to present the connection to current world events and Czech history.
Students will gain historical knowledge of facts of German speaking countries and will orientate in academic literature.

Assessment methods and criteria
Written examination, Presentation

Individual (reading, lecture) Group work (discussion ) Work with texts ( textbooks, internet material) Written examination at the end of the course. Completion of given assignments. Presentation (15 min.)by individual students or groups. Report tasks will be given during the first lecture.
