Course content
|
Language and number of its users, world language, artificial language, basic terminology. Language, speech, sign, kinds of signs and their characteristics. Communication, language functions, basic terminology, semiotic disciplines. Language signs, its structure and characteristics according to F. Saussure. Semiotics. Basic linguistic disciplines. Structure of language (linguistics). Phonetics and phonology. Grammar, morphology, morpheme, parts of speech. Graphics, script. Spoken and written form of language. Grammatical categories of nouns, adjectives and verbs. Lexicology, word-formation processes. Types of dictionaries. Semantics, semantic disciplines. Lexicon, lexicology, lexicography, lexical units. Syntax - introduction, definition of a sentence, types of questions, question and negation, sentence elements and their relationship. Syntax - functional sentence perspective, valence and generative syntax. Text and discourse, text factors, text linguistics. Pragmatics. Socio-linguistics. Psycho-linguistics. Genetic and typological classification of languages. Phases of development of linguistics since 19th century, movements, main principles and benefits, representatives - 19th century to today.

Learning outcomes
|
There will be presented basic information in relevant fields of general linguistics, mainly from the area of psychology of language and its communicative functions. Specific part brings an overlook of main development branches of linguistics of the 20th century.
Students will learn how to orientate in the structure of language, will gain ability segmentational analysis of its individual plans, will acquire academic linguistics terminology, will be able to work with linguistics literature.

|
Oral examination
Active participation in seminars and seminar paper on given topic. Oral exam based on the lectured topics.
