Course content
Definition of typography, paragraph and its make-up, Lorem ipsum…, line-breaking algorithm. Introduction to TeX, mark-up, plainTeX, LaTeX, marks for paragraph typesetting; logical vs. visual structure of a document. Mark-up languages: SGML, XML, XHTML, MathML, CSS, LaTeX; OOo, styles. Typographic units, rules of Czech straight typesetting. Line-breaking and hyphenation; examples of staight typesetting in TeX. Type, fonts, emphasizing; examples in LaTeX. Mixed typesetting: itemization, technical typesetting. Mathematical typesetting; examples in TeX. Publication preparation, parts of a book. Final editing of a text before printing, emendation, ČSN 88 0410. ConTeXt, TeX macros with many possibilities. Cross-references. Typography on the internet: entities, cascading styles. Most frequent errors and solecisms against Czech language spelling and grammar. Unicode.

Learning outcomes
Gain basic knowledge of document preparation using computers—acquaint self with typography and typesetting rules, text preparation for typesetting and printing, explanation of basic principles, algorithms and techniques of document preparation with respect to theirs usage during the publication process (preparation of textbooks, presentations, writing theses, program documentation and manuals, etc.) with focus on the TeX typesetting system.
Ability to prepare documents with respect to typography and Czech spelling rules, do emendations of a text, use TeX.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of text preparation in editors like OpenOffice.org Writer or MS Word using styles.
