Course content
General principles of regulation of glucose homeostasis. Diabetes mellitus (DM) - epidemiology, clinical presentation, diagnostics, and classification. Type 1 DM - pathophysiology, insulin treatment. Type 2 DM - pathophysiology, metabolic syndrome, treatment. Gestational diabetes and its treatment. Acute and chronic complications of diabetes. Thyroid diseases and their treatment. Specialized nursing care of patients with DM, and the nursing process. Consulting activities. Individual plan, evaluation, and documentation. Dietary treatment of diabetes. Education in diabetology - self-monitoring, treatment with insulin and oral antidiabetic drugs, hypoglycaemia, and prevention of complications. Physical activity - individual plan, evaluation, and documentation. Podiatry clinic - specialized nursing care of patients with diabetic foot syndrome.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the subject is to gain a comprehensive understanding of the treatment of diabetes and its complications and to acquire basic knowledge about diseases of the thyroid gland.
Students understand the basic principles of regulation of glucose metabolism, are well versed in the laboratory diagnostics of diabetes, and know acute and chronic complications of diabetes. They know the different types of diabetes and its treatment. They understand the specifics of the nursing process in patients with diabetes, are able to plan and manage nursing care focused on the individual needs of the person, and are ready for implementation of educational and consulting activities for patients with diabetes.

Completion of compulsory 50% attendance at the lectures. Completion of compulsory 80% attendance at the practicum sessions and seminars. Completing assigned written work. Successful completion of a written test. Successful completion of an oral examination.
