Course content
|
Diabetes mellitus (DM) - etiology, classification, clinical picture, diagnosis. DM - treatment options: general principles of therapy, diet therapy, insulin therapy, therapy with oral antidiabetic drugs. DM - physical activity, self-monitoring, prevention of complications. DM - acute complications (hypoglycaemia, hyperglycaemia, ketoacid diabetic coma, hyperosmolar diabetic coma, lactic acidosis). DM - microvascular, macrovascular and other organ complications. Metabolic syndrome. Definition of podiatry. Diabetic foot syndrome. Classification of diabetic foot syndrome. Screening options, diagnosis. Treatment options for diabetic foot syndrome: general principles of relief treatment, footwear, special contact fixation, prosthetic care. Growth factors and skin transplants. Prevention. Rehabilitation care. Specialized nursing care for patients with DM, nursing process. Physical examination by a nurse, assessment of current health status, mapping of patient's needs. Dietary plan, education. Collaboration with nutritional therapist. Counselling activities. Individual plan, assessment, documentation. Self-monitoring, insulin therapy, oral antidiabetics education, prevention of complications. Physical activity - individual plan, assessment, documentation. Podiatric counselling - specialized nursing care for diabetic foot syndrome. Education. Prescription of medical devices.

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the course is to introduce students to the issue of diabetes mellitus.
Students are familiar with the etiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, treatment and complications of diabetes mellitus and they understand the specifics of the nursing processes. They are able to plan and conduct nursing care focused on the individual needs of an individual, and they are prepared to carry out educational and counselling activities in this area.

Fulfillment of mandatory participation in lectures and exercises. Completion of a written test or an oral examination as decided by the subject guarantor.
