Course content
Europe after the Vienna Congress - heritage of the revolution and the return of old conditions; Saint Alliance congresses. Economic development in the 19th century - the first and second industrial revolution; conditions in various countries; relations to political development. The Habsburg monarchy in the first half of the 19th century. 1848 in Europe - ideas and reality. The development of the Czech countries after 1848. Neo-absolutism; forming a civil society (Constitutions of 1861, 1867); Czech-German relations; Czech policy. The colonial issue - colonial powers and their dominions; types of colonies; national-liberation struggles; connections to international relations. America in the 19th century - conditions of power on the Continent; the USA and their inner struggle; the progress of the USA toward the position of a great power. Great Britain in the 19th century. The unity of Italy and its international context. Italy before the First World War. The unity of Germany and its international context. Germany before the First World War. Russia in the 19th century - political, economic development and cultural development. Foreign policy. France in the 19th century. Restoration; the July Monarchy; the Second Emperorship; the Third Republic. The Balkans in the 19th century - the Ottoman Empire; the national-liberty struggle; the origin of independent states. Main political movements in Europe in the 19th century. International relationships, 1871-1914. The First World War.

Learning outcomes
The aim of this course is analysis and interpretation of key issues and events of 19th century history, both Czech and foreign literature and contemporary methods in historiography of 19th century history.
Students will be familiar with basal processes connected with development of Euroatlantic civilization circle, essentials to understand to contemporary society. Course is also aimed on skills of analysis and interpretation of historical sources and critique of literature.
Prerequisites
Passive knowledge of foreign language.

Assessment methods and criteria
Written examination

Credit is dependent on active participation in the seminars. Accepted will be 3 absention per semester. Course will be finished with written exam.
