Course content
The birth of modern Europe. Ottoman Empire in 17 and 18 centuries. Enforcing absolutism in France. The English Revolution, Restoration, and the origin of constitutional monarchy. Swedish expansion in the second half of the 17th century. Re-Catholisation in the Czech countries. The reigns of Leopold I, Joseph I, and Charles VI - superseding the Turkish threat. The rise of Braniborsko - Prussia. The Italian states in the 18th century. Russian self-keeping in the 18th century. Absolutism during the Enlightenment and the reign of Marie Teresa and Joseph II. The American fight for independence. The French Revolution (1789-1799).

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to introduce students to national history within the context of European and world history from Humanism and the Renaissance to the European Age of Reason.
Students should orientate in the Europian history of early modern times and in this frame they should examine the role of the Czech lands ruled by the Habsburgs.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral examination

For a student of cultural history (KD): The course ends with an oral examination. The student will bring a list of at least 24 titles of literature that were individually studied (12 + 12, encompassing both terms). For a student of archival service (SAS) and history (HIST): The course ends with a written test and then the student comes to a short oral examination over his/her readings. The student will bring a list of at least 14 titles of literature that were individually studied (7 + 7, encompassing both terms).
