Course content
What is a museum? A brief outline of historical development of these institutions. Mission and aims of a museum; definition of the term. International ethical codex of museums. The term musealisation and general questions to the origin of museums. Activity of making collections in museums; professional administration of collections. Activity of making collections in museums and its general principles: subject of cultural heritage in fondo and in situ, an issue of value criteria - mobilization of collections as a professional creative activity. Non-substitutability of so-called "relevant" (professional) documentation. Protection of collections. Negative influences that worsen or influence negatively the state of collections (humidity and temperature, light). Chemical influences and biological pests; prevention and means of protection against them. Some of the rules and methods for basic treatment of collections, according to individual material types and types of collections. Placement of collections in depositories: general rules necessary for depository equipment. Introduction to the issue of conservation and restoration of collections: essential terminology. Main rules of conservator's and restorer's work.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to introduce students to the mission of museums, their origin and history (with special attention to the Czech lands), with attention to various types of these institutions. They will learn about the creation of museum collections (the musealisation process), rules of evidence, and the professional administration of museum collections, the preventive care for them, as well as their protection and security.
Students will acquire practical knowledge about the creation of museum collections, skills in recognizing suitable conditions for placement in museums, and elementary skills in keeping records.
