Course content

Outline of the plastic arts and their basic characteristics; graphic and plastic methods. Primeval art. Egyptian art and the art of South American civilizations (America before Columbus, Mexico, Peru). The period before Hellenism. Greek and Roman art - architecture (column arrangement), sculpture, and painting. Early Christian and Byzantium art. Pre-Roman and Carolinian art. Roman art in southern and western Europe - architecture, sculpture, painting, artistic craft. Roman art in Bohemia and Moravia - architecture, sculpture, mural and book painting. Gothic - time definition, style characteristics, art of the Middle Ages, and aesthetics. Gothic art in southern and western Europe - architecture, sculpture, painting, artistic craft. Gothic in Bohemia and Moravia - architecture, sculpture, painting, artistic craft. Art and culture during the reign of Charles IV.

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of this course is to introduce the problem of individual plastic arts and painting (architecture, sculpture, painting, drawing and graphics, arts and crafts). During individual lessons, the basic outline of art from ancient times to the period of the late Middle Ages and Renaissance will be introduced to the students.
The students will acquire a basic orientation in the problems of plastic arts history, and will become familiar with the chronological outline and stylistic attributes of individual styles.

Credit is dependent upon passing the final oral examination, where the student is expected to demonstrate an understanding of the subject matter and the recommended literature.
