Course content
Topics: Passions and Fashions Dangerous Journeys in History Social Conscience High Technologies Fact or Fiction? People Who Changed the World Grammar: Present Perfect, Simple and Continuous, Active and Passive Verb patterns Conditionals Noun phrases Modal verbs of probability Reported speech Content of Units 7-12 New Headway Intermediate (Fourth edition), including Workbook exercises and listening exercises.

Learning outcomes
English course CEFR B1 prepares students to passing an exam at level CEFR B1. The course focuses on various communicative needs of students developing language skills such as reading and listening comprehension, writing (different types of texts), it also supports orientation in natural communicative situations and when using idioms. Students will be familiar with the systems of English tenses and their basic use in everyday situations. Texts and audio materials work with factual and abstract contexts.
Students will acquire ability of wider use of tenses, gain a complete grammar review, learn how to use phrases and phrasal verbs. They will gain the ability to quote and express themselves fluently. After the term, their knowledge will be sufficient enough to hold a common conversation in everyday situations.
Prerequisites
Knowledge of English at level B1 at least. At the beginning of semester, students can be tested and on the basis of the entrance test results, they can be redeployed to the course of a different language level according to CEFR.

Assessment methods and criteria
Written examination

Written test (70% at least). Parts of the test: grammar, listening and reading comprehension. Attendance 80%
