Course content
Introduction in the modern history of Bulgaria. Periodization of the Bulgarin history of the 19th and 20th century. Bibliography and information sources. The Balkan peninsula from the beginning of 19th century století till 1870's. Bulgarian anti-Osman revolts. The religious bulharská protiturecká povstání; the church question. Russo-Turkish war in 1877-1878 and its consequences for Bulgarian area. The establishment of Bulgarian principality and formation of its institutions. The beginning of the Bulgarian political life. The development of the Eastern Rumelia after 1878. The unification of Bulgaria in 1885. Stefan Stambulov's regim and its fall. Bulgaria at the turn of 19th and 20th century. The declaration of the Bulgarian independence (1908) and its historical context. The Balkan Wars a its consequences. Bulgaria in the World War One (1915 - 1918). The defeat in World War One and its consequences. The Neuilly peace treaty. The emergence of new political elites (1918-1919), the self-rule of BZNS (1920 - 1923); the coup in the 1923, the government of the Democratic agreement (1923 - 1931). Bulgaria in the 1930's. Government of the National Bloc (1931 - 1934). Coup d'etat of 19th May 1934, the dissolution of parliamentary system. Tsar Boris III. and his personal rule. The crisis in Europe in the second half of 1930's and Bulgaria. Bulgaria during the Second World War. The coup fo 9th September 1944 and its consequences. First government of the Patriotic Front. The consolidation of the political monopol of the Communist party. Bulgaria as the member of the Eastern bloc (1946 - 1947). Stalinism in Bulgaria. Internal policy in 1948-1953. Stalinims in economy and culture. Bulgaria and its internal policy after 1953. The critics of the personality cult, the april plenum in 1956. The era of Zhivkov. The economical and cultural development of Bulgaria after 1953. The foreign policy of Bulgaria, 1944-1989. Bulgaria as a member of Eastern bloc; regional policy, the relations with Western Europe and Unites States. Political and economical crisis of 1980's. The dissident's movement in Bulgaria.

Learning outcomes
The course is focused on the historical development of Bulgaria in the 19th and 20th century with accent on the period after the establishment of the new Bulgarian state in 1878 until the fall of communist regime and the dissolution of Eastern bloc in 1989. Aside the internal policy, the great attention will be devoted to foreign policy of Bulgaria, to the geographical changes, economical and social progress. The Bulgarian history will be analyze in the historical context of Southeastern Europe, and with the regard to European and global processes. The ideological and ovesimplified interpretations of the crucial moments in the modern Bulgarian history, and the narrowed national view of the historical process will be critically analysed.
The students will gain the knowledge of modern Bulgarian history (19th and 20th century), the contemporary trends in the Bulgarian historiography and the national conceptions of a interpretation of the Bulgarian past.
