Course content
The birth of a female writer in the Czech literature of the 19th century. The issue of genesis of a literary work: female versus male author's handwriting? The problem of reception and projection: a female and a male literary canon. Girls' and women's diaries: personal confession as a literary work of art? Correspondence as a novel in letters: Božena Němcová, Karolina Světlá, and others. Three great creators and the literary image of the Czech countryside: Božena Němcová, Karolina Světlá, Teréza Nováková. The female character in literary-generic and genre changes - the heroine in lyrics, epics, drama. The image of the woman in various periods, movements, etc.: from Pre-Romanticism to literature with a realistic-naturalistic orientation. Learning outcomes
The aim of this course is primarily to demarcate the birth of the phenomenon of the female creative personality and the various aspects of its developmental changes in Czech letters in the 19th century. Furthermore, it will outline the co-existence of so-called "female literature" and "male literature", attempts at gendered reflection on various questions (from a literary-historical point of view), etc. Complementarily, given that the issue will be discovered in the background of the poetics of character, this course will consider the specific ways that women were portrayed in literary works - in the form of type analyses of selected heroines present in prosaic, poetic, and dramatic texts by male and female Czech writers of the 19th century.
A graduate of this course gains conception of possibilities how to understand literary works by way of analysis and interpretation of their semantic plan gender aspects. Qualification gained this way will at the end be supplemented by overview about the most distinct women writers of the Czech literature in the 19th century.

Credit is dependent on active participation and attendance (only three absences are permitted per term); reading the reference texts; presenting a paper and submitting its written equivalent (5-10 pages in length).
