Course content
Postcolonial period as a dynamic reality full of contrasts. The myth of African empires and wealth, myth of the dark continent. Diversity of and conflicts among the centralised systems as well as non-centralised groups. Resistance against and collaboration with the colonial aggression. Direct and non-direct government in the colonies. The systems of government (British, French, Belgian, Portuguese and Italian). Colonial situation (Balandier). African chieftancy: relic or reality, which needs to be considered? Industry and job migration as a result of economic penetration into the colonies. Colonial cities: continuity of ethnic fragmentation as well as new social structures. Relationship between the Africans and Europeans. African nationalistic and political independence movements. Independent state: African reaction to forced political models (neo-patriomonialism, clientelism, violence). Democracy and dictatorship in Africa. The problem of one-party government, populism, corporatism. Comparison with post-communist Europe and post-Soviet Eurasia. African postcolonial urbanisation: ties with the country, role of kinship, shantytowns. African countryside. Transformation of tradition. Role of religion in African societies. Tribalism and modern state. Search for compromise in government. Neo-colonialism. Present African crisis (HIV/AIDS, poverty, genocide, ethnocide, war conflicts) and its solutions.

Learning outcomes

The successful passing of this subject will enable the students to better understand socio-cultural, political and economic problems of the present sub-Saharan Africa.
