Course content
Topics: General characterization and periodization of Roman literature Archaic period: T. M. Plautus, P. Terentius Afer - two kinds of Roman comedy Cicero`s period: C. Valerius Catulus - Neoteric lyrical poetry, M. T. Cicero - the culmination of Roman rhetoric and prose Augustus` period: Vergilius and Horatius - the first poetic generation, Tibullus and Propertius - Roman elegiacs, Ovidius - the second poetic generation Silver period: M. V. Martialis - the master of epigram, Petronius - a Roman novel Decadent period: Lucius Apuleius - varied miscellany

Learning outcomes
The subject gives more detailed insight into the problems of ancient literature, especially into Grecian literature. In the course of the seminar, notable Grecian writers and their main work will be introduced to the students. The students will be acquainted with the atmosphere of the period the writers lived and worked in; the attention will be paid mainly to the generally less well-known works whose contents and style will be presented to the students through the text analysis.
The students will gain a basic view of the most significant authors of ancient Roman and their work.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral examination, Oral performance analysis, Discussion

Participation in seminars (3 unexcused absences at the most), reading and the analysis of two works of the recommended literature within a final interview, a final interview about the given topic and work with text.
