Course content
An introduction to hermeneutic philosophy - F. Schleiermacher, W. Dilthey, M. Heidegger, H. G. Gadamer. The place, position, and function of hermeneutic philosophy in the 20th century - phenomenology, structuralism, the analytical philosophy of language. Criticism of the Cartesian subject-object paradigm of the world.

Learning outcomes
The objective of this course is the analysis of the points of departure, concepts, and methods of hermeneutics in the 19th century. The analysis will mostly focus on a study of key hermeneutic concepts of understanding, the interpretation of historical meaning, the hermeneutic circle, tradition and historicity and their methodological meaning for modern historical sciences. Attention will also be paid to analysis of the relationship between explanation and understanding, the relationship between the philosophical grounds of modern natural science and the new expanding human sciences. The course will cultivate the interpretive ability of students in connection with the tradition of human scholarship.
Students will learn how to understand modern scientific rationality and also, what is the difference between this kind of rationality and modern human sciences within the tradition of European modern philosophy. Students will be able to see differences between the philosophical foundations of modern natural and human sciences.

Attendance at seminars is obligatory. Credit is dependent upon writing and presenting a semester paper dealing with one of the given topics and passing a written test.
