Course content
The introduction. Methodology, tradition of the Bulgarian historiography. Definition of the elementary terms - the relationship between land and people, basic toponymy and etnonymy. Bulgarian lands in the ancient times - Thracians and Illyrians. The coming of Slavs and Proto-Bulgarians. The Bulgarian lands as a part of the First Bulgarian Empire. The First Bulgarian Empire in the Slanovic context - the cultural aspects. The West Bulgarian Empire and the gradual downfall of the Bulgarian statehood. The Bulgarian lands under the Byzantine rule. The revival of statehood. The Second Bulgarian Empire. The dissolution of Bulgaria in the eyes of historiography. The end of Bulgarian statehood and the coming of Ottomans. The consolidation of the Ottoman power. Its character and specifics. The final summary: the most important moments of the ancient and medieval Bulgarian history.

Learning outcomes
The course is focused on the history of Bulgaria from the ancient times to the period of Osman-Turkish rule over Bulgarian territory and other parts of Balkan peninsula.
The students will gain the knowledge of the Bulgaria's historical development from the ancient times to the Middle Age and the period of Osman-Turkish rule. Simoultaneously they should be able to know the contemporary trends of Bulgarian historiography and its national concepts of interpretation.

The written exam (eventually report paper) and active participation on the lessons (80%). The oral exam.
