Course content
The book market and its characteristics. Past, present, and developmental tendencies in the Czech book market. A book and its technicalities. Typography. Editorial work. Running a publishing firm. Edit planning. The production and manufacture of a book. Book marketing and advertising. Legal connections to publishing activities.

Learning activities and teaching methods
Monologic (reading, lecture, briefing), Dialogic (discussion, interview, brainstorming), Work with text (with textbook, with book), Methods of individual activities
Learning outcomes
The aim of this course is to introduce students to the activities connected with book publication. This course serves as an introduction to function of the book market in the world and especially in the Czech Republic. Students are informed about the rules of editorial work with manuscript, the technological methods employed during the preparation of book publication (setting, polygraphy, creative conception), the organization of work in contemporary publishing firms. Marketing, distribution, and advertising create one separate chapter; information about legal connections associated with this type of business is included.
As a result, students will posses basic skills in this field, being able to apply them later, either as an author or as an editor.

Written examination

Active participation in seminars and sufficient attendance are the conditions for the acquiring credit (with a tolerated maximum of three absences per term).
