Course content
The origins of fantastic literature in 19th century The era of pulp magazines The golden age of American science fiction "New wave" and other experiments The solitaries Cyberpunk Steampunk Alternative history Historical fantasy Modern Czech (post-WW 2) literary fantasy Contemporary fantasy (new space opera, new weird etc.) Modern horror (from splatter punk until today)

Learning outcomes
In this course students will be introduced to the development of fantastic literature (science fiction, fantasy, fantasy horror) from the time of its beginnings in the 19th century until the present. The tendencies of literary development will be presented on bio- and bibliographical portraits of both Czech and foreign writers and by reading and analysing their key works.
The students will gather an overview of fantastic literature, an important segment of popular culture - nowadays a strong influence - and also get acquainted with literary genres, which the traditionally oriented literary criticism has so far omitted.

The attendance is compulsory, the student can miss a maximum of 3 lessons. The condition for acquiring a credit is sufficient attendance, active participation and a presentation of a paper on a chosen theme or author.
