Course content
Basic terminology, defining the topic European hermetism of early modern age and its revival in the 19th century Alternative spiritual concepts in the 19th century philosophy The beginnings of modern occultism in Czech milieu The personalities of Czech occultism Czech occultist organisations and ther activities Spiritism as a distinct type of occultism and its development in Czechlands Occultism in the shade of totalitarianism and in the light of science The influence of occultism on Czech literature The influence of occultism on Czech fine arts Occultism in the postmodern world

Learning activities and teaching methods
Monologic (reading, lecture, briefing), Dialogic (discussion, interview, brainstorming), Work with text (with textbook, with book)
Learning outcomes
The course focuses on occultism and other forms of irrational and magical thinking in modern Czech culture on the background of the situation in Europe. The topic will be discussed from historical/chronological point of view, and also as an integral part of research in the fields of religionistic, anthropology, art and literary history.
The students will acquire basic knowledge of this cultural phenomenon and its positon in Czech and European context, which can be used in their further studies or their own expert work.

The attendance is compulsory, the student can miss a maximum of 3 lessons. The condition for acquiring a credit is sufficient attendance, active participation and a presentation of a paper on a chosen theme or author.
