Course content
Orbis polonus: geographical context, ethnic and religious map of the region. The Piast Poland. Under the Polish crown. The Polish Kingdom until the extinction of the Piast dynasty. Silesia between Poland and Czech. Casimir III. the Great and the first "golden age" of Poland. The Polish-Lithuanian State againt the Knight's Orders in Pomerania and Livonia. The Jagiellonian Kingdom. Rzecpospolita - "the noble republic" as a model for state organization. Renaissance, sarmatism, and noble culture in the age of "golden liberty". Poles and the Ottomans. The Sweden dynasty on the Polish throne. The Vasas and their endeavour to rule over the Balticum. Khmeľnyts'kyi, the Swedish "Deluge" and the Polish "national mythology". Finis Poloniae: the European Powers and the Partition of Poland.

Learning outcomes
The the course is focused on the history of Poland from the beggining of the Polish state under the firt Piast rulers until the end of the 18th century (the partition of Poland). The history of Poland will be examined in the broad context of East-Central European history, with the attention not only on the political but first of all on the cultural, social and religious developments within and outside Poland. After the finishing this course, the student will know the specifics of the historical progress of this area and be able to work with relevant literature.
Students will be able to understand main problems of the given historical period, will orientate in Polish history of the era and will discuss main secondary literature.

Written examination

Regular participation on the lectures. Final paper (neccessary to win at least 70%). The list of the read literature.
