Course content
Napoleonic Wars, Polish question and the creation of nation (nations). Divided and united? The parts of Poland in the 1st half of the 19th century. The conscience of Europe? Polish insurrections in the 19th century. Everyday life of the Polish society in the 19th century. The end of romantism? The parts of Poland in the 2nd half of the 19th century. The First World War and the emergence of the II. Polish Republic. Poland between two world wars. Polish society and the 2nd World War. The captive of stalinism. Poland 1945-1956. The Polish way to socialism? (1956-1980) The searching for new or old Poland? (1980-2001).

Monologic (reading, lecture, briefing), Dialogic (discussion, interview, brainstorming)
Learning outcomes
The course is focused on the modern history of Poland. The lectures are concentrated on the political, cultural, social and economic development of the Polish society. The first major topic is the formation of the modern Polish nation, its relation to other nations in the area of the East-Central Europe and the Polish fight for the creation of the independent Polish state. The second major topic is the history of the new Poland after 1918 and the transformation of the Polish society until the end of the 20th century.
Students will acquire the knowledge of most important events, personalities and periods of Polish history. They will be able to find causality between the events and structural development of Polish society.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral examination

Credit is based on an oral examination. Students are expected to bring the list of literature that they read to the examination (at least 10 books or articles, at least one in Polish).
