Course content
The conception of mass and popular culture. The origin, development, and reception of popular literature. Popular literature from the point of view of literary theory. The relation of popular and artistic literature. Popular literature in the context of postmodernist culture. Literary practice of the given field (types of authors, specifics of publishers, the role of criticism). Popular literature in other media (film, television, comics). The development, essential works, and authors of detective prose domestically and abroad. The development, essential works, and authors of science fiction and fantasy domestically and abroad. The development, essential works, and authors of horror literature domestically and abroad.

Learning outcomes
The aim of this course is to introduce students to the literary-scientific, cultural, and sociological theories of popular literature and to allow them to follow the development of the reception of popular literature in the context of the history of modern literature. Special attention will be paid to the relationship between popular and artistic literature and to the presence of this portion of literary culture in other media. The development of central genres of popular literature in this country and abroad will be an important part of the instruction.
Students who complete this course should be able to orient in the field of "non-canonical" literary creation and, at the same time, a significant part of contemporary popular culture.

Credit will depend on regular attendance and active participation during the seminars (only three absences are permitted per term) and a study of the recommended literature.
