Course content
Europe on the eve of the Thirty Years War (characteristics of the period and the problems of division of the 30YW into individual phases; the main powers in Europe and their spheres of interest; centres of conflicts). The Czech state on the way to the Revolt of the Estates and White Mountain (the end of the 16th century - 1620). Militarism during 30YW (types of field army, equipment and equipage, organization of the armies, command, supplies, Spanish and Dutch tactics, developmental tendencies during the 30YW). Palatine and Danish War, the first generalship of Albrecht of Wallenstein (main events in Europe in the years 1621-1630). Lands of the Bohemian Crown after the White mountain (the trial and execution of the Revolt of Estates protagonists; property confiscation; collapse of finance - "a long coin" and the so-called "kalada"; liquidation of the remains of the revolt against the Habsburgs; start of the re-Catholicisation of the country. Renewed Land Constitution- constitutional changes; problems of emigration after the White Mountain. The second generalship and the fall of Albrecht of Wallenstein; war events in the years 1631-1640. Conquering fortresses and fortress engineering in the first half of the 17th century. Changes in the structure of nobility in Bohemia during the 30YW and changes of the aristocratic lifestyle. Transformations of the life in towns and the countryside during the Thirty Years War in the Czech lands (real examples of everyday life). Final phase of the war in Europe and the Czech lands, the thorny path to the Peace of Westphalia (1641-1648). The consequences of the 30YW for the development in Europe, especially in the Czech lands. Summary. Outline of the sources to the history of the 30YW and the characteristics of historical production of the last decades; perspectives on further research.

Learning outcomes
The aim of this course is to provide students with an explanation of the development of the Thirty Years War, along with its causes, the nature of this conflict, and its impacts on the development of Europe. Attention will be chiefly paid to questions of political development, problems of religious conditions, militarism, economical-social aspects, and cultural issues. Special attention will be paid to development in the Czech countries and exemplifying the development of events in other regions.
Students will be get an outline of the course of the Thirty Years War, of its causes, character and results for European development. Students will also become familiar with basic literature and sources for the given topic.

Assessment methods and criteria
Written examination

Credit is dependent on passing a written test (of approximately 60 questions; at least 70 is required to pass). In the case of failure, there will be the possibility for two more correction tests.
