Course content
Historisms and architecture of the 19th century. Art Nouveau. Modernism. Czech architectonic Cubism. Art Déco. Neo-Classicism. Purism, Poetism and Functionalism. So-called "International style". Socialist-Realist architecture (Sorela). Brussels style.

Learning outcomes
The aim of this course is to introduce the outline of the main stylistic periods of modern architecture in the Czech countries from the first half of the 19th till the end of the 20th century. The development of theoretical thinking about the period is stressed; and the ideological background of architectural works and the joining of Czech architectural/cultural modes in a European context is centralized. Student will acquire a basic orientation in the history of Czech and European modern architecture and learn about the origin of specific architectonic works and about the context of thought together with the social-political context.
Students will learn how to recognize the main architectonic movements in the Czech lands from 1850 up to the end of 20 century.

Credit is dependent upon presentation of a seminar paper on an assigned topic, passing the final picture-recognition test, and a final oral examination based on the knowledge of the literature and the subject.
