Course content
Definition of the term "holocaust"; specifics of the holocaust (possibility of comparison with other genocides in the 20th century). Historiography; basic trends in research work. Continuity of Anti-Semitism in Germany after 1918. The Republic of Weimar and the Jews. The Nazi entry to control. The role of Anti-Semitism in Nazi ideology. Jews in Germany from 1933-1939. Loss of civil rights; Arisation process; emigration. War and the "Jewish issue". The first phase: September 1939 - June 1941. Genesis of the "final solution". War and the "Jewish issue". The second phase: June 1941 - May 1945. The development of genocide. Chronology of events; basic facts. Genocide as a part of the war operations. The exterminatory part of fights at the Eastern line. Masaryk in the Baltic area, Byelorussia, and Ukraine. Contribution of local inhabitants to the genocide. Systematization of mass killing. Annihilation camps in Poland, their typology, inner structure, and mechanisms. Main examples: Osvětim, Belzec, Sobibor, Treblinka, Chelmno, Majdanek. The genocide of the Jews and the German satellites: Slovakia, Hungary, Rumania, Bulgaria, Croatia, and "Vichystic" France. Perpetrators. Attempts at social profiling. Court trials after the war. Victims. Attempts at armed resistance (Warsaw rebellion, rebellion in the camps). Attempts to save the Jews. The attitude of the Allies, organizations, individuals.

Learning outcomes
The aim of this course is a complex analysis of the causes and the development of the genocide of the European Jews. Of prime concern are the variants and changes of Nazi politics towards the Jews in connection with Anti-Semite ideology and political development. From a regional point of view, the course is focused on the study of the differences in attitude among the European governments towards the Jews, with regard to local traditions, the historical development of each country, and their relationship to Germany. A personal point of view is also significant - the profile of the genocide perpetrators as well as fates of their victims. The students will be able to explain the causes of genocide, to interpret the anti-Jewish policy of Germany and its allies, and to explain the genocide of the Jews in the context of the history of the 20th century.
